Fractional executive cost planning for an MSP: calculator on a printed monthly budget report

Last updated: October 2, 2026

A fractional executive runs roughly $7,000 to $12,600 a month per seat in 2026, based on market rates near $177 an hour for about 14 to 15 hours of senior work a week, the market’s typical engagement. An MSP doesn’t necessarily need that much. A fractional CFO for an MSP can be a few hours a week or a few hours a month, depending on scope. A fractional CMO and a fractional CFO price almost the same. Hours move the number. The title doesn’t.

Key Takeaways

The short version

  • Market data puts both seats near $177 an hour. The monthly bill is mostly a function of hours.
  • Fractional CMO, middle of the market, runs $7,500 to $12,600 a month for about 15 hours a week.
  • A fractional CFO lands at $7,000 to $11,400 a month at the market’s typical 14 hours a week. An MSP doesn’t necessarily need 14. Depending on scope, a few hours a week or a few hours a month can be enough, and the bill drops with the hours.
  • A full-time hire in either seat costs an IT services company roughly $278,000 to $289,000 a year once benefits are loaded.
  • Neither fee covers execution. Your agency, ad spend, and bookkeeper are still separate lines.

Every MSP owner who has asked me what a fractional CMO costs has gotten some version of “it depends.” Fair. It’s also useless when you’re trying to build next year’s budget.

So here are real numbers. Not a rate card lifted from one firm’s sales page. The market data, the full-time comparison with the benefits math shown, and what both seats cost together, which is the question almost nobody answers.

One thing up front. I’m a fractional CMO at C4 Solutions, and we sell both seats, a fractional CMO service for MSPs and a fractional CFO service for MSPs and tech companies. Weigh the C4 parts with that in mind. The market figures aren’t ours. Every one of them links out to its source.

What a Fractional Executive Costs in 2026

Fractional executive cost is the monthly or hourly fee a company pays for a senior leader, usually a CMO or CFO, who works part-time on a retainer instead of drawing a full-time salary. The price is set by hours and scope, and it carries none of the benefits, payroll tax, or recruiting cost of a permanent hire.

Most pricing pages on this topic are written by firms selling the service. Keep that in mind. The one rate tracker I’ve found that publishes its method, sample, and formula is Go Fractional’s rolling 90-day benchmark, built from public job posts and candidate profiles, and it puts both the fractional CMO and the fractional CFO at an average of $177 an hour.

Fractional CMO Fractional CFO
Average hourly rate $177 $177
Middle 50% of hourly rates $125 to $210 $125 to $205
Typical scope in market data About 15 hours a week About 14 hours a week
Monthly retainer, middle of market $7,500 to $12,600 $7,000 to $11,400
Annual cost at the average rate About $127,200 About $118,800

A second data set lands in the same neighborhood, a little higher. The Fractional Work Report 2026 from Fractional Jobs surveyed fractional executives directly and found self-reported averages of $209 an hour in marketing and $229 in finance, with 46% billing primarily on a monthly retainer. Market postings versus self-reported rates. Different methods. Same ballpark.

Napkin math works here. Hours per week, times four, times the hourly rate. Fifteen hours at $177 is $10,620 a month. Cut the scope to eight hours and the same person costs $5,664. That’s the real lever, and it’s why two quotes for “a fractional CMO” can sit $5,000 apart without either firm overcharging you.

Rates are drifting up, too. In Heidrick & Struggles’ 2026 Talent Lens Survey of 3,810 independent professionals, 30% reported higher daily rates in 2025 than in 2024, and small and medium companies now account for more than four-fifths of the demand. That second number is you.

Fractional CMO Cost for an MSP

Start with the $7,500 to $12,600 band. Lighter advisory scopes come in below it. Hands-on leadership during a real growth push sits at the top of it, or past it. Where your MSP lands in that band depends on a handful of things that have nothing to do with how impressive the CMO’s resume looks or how many logos sit on their website.

  • Hours, obviously. Eight hours a week buys direction. Fifteen buys direction plus the time to manage the people executing it.
  • Whether anyone can execute. A fractional CMO owns strategy and systems. They don’t replace your team or your agency, and if there’s nobody to hand the plan to, you’re paying senior rates for someone to also write the emails.
  • Your stage. A $3 million MSP fixing its positioning needs a different scope than a $10 million MSP opening a second market in Phoenix.
  • What’s broken. Is it the offer, the channel mix, or the fact that nobody can say which channel produced last quarter’s deals?

The fee isn’t the budget. It’s the leadership line sitting on top of it. The agency retainer, the ad spend on Google and LinkedIn, the software, the content production, and the time your own people spend on marketing all still get paid for separately, month after month. Our breakdown of what MSP marketing costs covers those lines channel by channel.

Here’s where the fee can actually shrink the total, though. One of the MSP results we publish started with a client paying for offshore marketers, an SEO agency, HubSpot, and a pile of other tools. High cost. Low output. We replaced it with AI-powered workflows, one internal operator, and fractional CMO leadership. Marketing cost dropped 60 to 70%, and the client now gets one to two qualified leads a day. The fee paid for itself.

If you only need a plan, not someone accountable for running it, a consultant may be the cheaper buy. Our fractional CMO vs. marketing consultant comparison walks through that decision.

Fractional CFO Cost for an MSP

The market band is $7,000 to $11,400 a month at about 14 hours a week. An MSP doesn’t necessarily need 14. MSP fractional CFO engagements can be a few hours a week or a few hours a month, depending on scope. A CFO working a monthly cadence, closing the loop on forecasts, margins, and the board deck, might need four hours a week. At $177 an hour that’s about $2,832 a month. A stable MSP with clean books and a narrow scope, say a monthly review of the numbers and a quarterly planning session, may only need a few hours a month.

Then there’s the other direction. Somebody calls about buying your MSP, or you decide to sell in three years, and suddenly you need clean, normalized financials, a defensible EBITDA number, and someone who’s been through diligence before. That work runs heavy. Usually for a few months. Some firms price it as a project instead of a retainer.

What you’re paying for is interpretation. Not bookkeeping. Your books still get closed by whoever closes them today in QuickBooks Online or Xero. The CFO works above that layer, turning agreement-level profitability from ConnectWise PSA or Autotask, MRR trends, and gross margin by service line into decisions about pricing, hiring, and when to take on debt.

Fractional CFO cost review: leadership team marking up printed financial reports

Demand is climbing fast. CFO Dive reported in August 2026 that requests for interim C-suite leadership have jumped 151% since 2021, and demand for interim CFOs rose 14% year over year, citing Business Talent Group’s 2026 High-End Independent Talent Report. Good finance leaders who understand recurring revenue aren’t getting cheaper. Budget accordingly.

Is it worth it? One CEO client credits a five-year engagement with C4, fractional CFO included, with tripling the business, and says bringing in the CFO “completely transformed our financial operations.” That’s one client. Your mileage depends on whether you’ll act on what the numbers say. If you’re comparing providers, our comparison of fractional CFO services for MSPs covers five of them, including the ones that go deeper on MSP-only finance than we do.

What a Full-Time Hire Really Costs

Here’s an awkward fact. The Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t track “CFO” or “CMO” as occupations. The closest it gets is marketing managers and financial managers, categories that span a wide range of management levels, so treat the BLS number as a floor rather than a C-suite salary.

Nationally, the median wage in May 2025 was $166,790 for marketing managers and $166,570 for financial managers. Inside computer systems design and related services, the BLS industry group that covers IT services firms like MSPs, those medians rise to $194,300 and $201,950. Close enough for a budget.

Salary is only 70% of what an employee costs. The BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release from September 2026 puts benefits at 30.0% of total compensation for private industry workers. Divide salary by 0.70 and you get the loaded number. That’s the real cost.

Seat Full-time, loaded (IT services median) Fractional, middle of market
CMO About $277,600 a year $90,000 to $151,200 a year
CFO About $288,500 a year $84,000 to $136,800 a year
Both seats About $566,100 a year $174,000 to $288,000 a year

Full-time figures exclude bonus, equity, and the recruiting fee, all of which push a real executive hire higher. And the salary sites don’t agree with each other, not even close. Built In’s average base pay is $229,069 for a CFO and $225,908 for a CMO, which loads out past $322,000 for either seat before a single bonus is paid. Other salary sites run much lower or much higher. Pick your source. The gap to fractional stays wide.

The fractional price isn’t a discount on the same thing, though. You’re buying roughly 35% to 38% of a full-time week, not a full-time leader at a markdown. For most MSPs between $2 million and $15 million in revenue, two days of senior attention a week or less is enough to set direction, hold people accountable, and still leave budget for the work itself. Past that, a full-time hire starts to earn its cost.

What Both Seats Cost Together

This is the gap. Every pricing guide I’ve read covers one seat. Just one. MSP owners rarely think about them one at a time, because the same growth plan usually needs both a pipeline and a finance function that can tell you whether the pipeline is profitable.

Below are example scopes priced at the $177 market average. They’re illustrations built from the rate data above, not quotes, and your scope could be lighter or heavier. That goes double for the CFO seat, which can run on a few hours a month rather than 14 a week.

MSP revenue Example scope Both seats, monthly Both seats, annual Share of revenue
$2M to $5M CMO 8 hrs/wk, CFO 4 hrs/wk About $8,500 About $102,000 2.0% to 5.1%
$5M to $10M CMO 15 hrs/wk, CFO 8 hrs/wk About $16,300 About $195,400 2.0% to 3.9%
$10M to $20M CMO 15 hrs/wk, CFO 14 hrs/wk About $20,500 About $246,400 1.2% to 2.5%

Look at row one. At $2 million in revenue, $102,000 is 5.1% of the top line for leadership alone, before a dollar goes to execution. That’s why I’d rarely tell an MSP that size to buy both seats at once. Pick one.

Which one? Usually the seat sitting on your biggest leak. Pipeline stalled but cash is fine? CMO first. Growing on paper while margins shrink, or a buyer just called? CFO first. If you honestly can’t tell which problem you have, that’s worth a conversation before it’s worth a retainer.

For a sense of scale, Gartner’s 2026 CMO Spend Survey puts total marketing budgets at 7.8% of company revenue. That sample leans heavily toward companies above $1 billion, so read it as a ceiling for an MSP, not a target.

When a Fractional Executive Isn’t Worth It Yet

Sometimes the honest answer is don’t. Not yet.

  • You’re under about $2 million with simple, predictable financials. A good CPA and a reliable bookkeeper cover that stage.
  • Nobody on your side can execute, and there’s no budget for an agency either.
  • You want a done-for-you marketing department. That’s an agency’s job, not a CMO’s.
  • You’re under $1 million and need a place to start. C4OS, our marketing operating system for MSPs, runs $595 a month and gives you the playbook and tools without hiring anyone fractional at all.
  • You already know the hard decision and you’re hoping someone will make it for you.

That last one’s more common than you’d think. An owner can pay for a year of excellent advice about repricing the oldest client agreements, never send a single renewal letter, and end up with the most expensive kind of fractional engagement there is. A fractional executive can show you the numbers. They can’t make you act on them.

What to Check Before You Sign

Most fractional firms don’t publish a rate card, which our comparison of fractional executive firms for MSPs ran into over and over. So the contract is where you learn what you’re actually buying. Read it for these.

  • Hours in writing, per month, and what happens to the ones you don’t use.
  • The minimum term and the notice period. Three months, twelve, or month to month?
  • Who executes, and who pays for them.
  • Everything the fee excludes, like ad spend, agency retainers, software, and bookkeeping.
  • How success gets measured. Pipeline and margin, not activity.

For the record, C4 doesn’t sell fixed packages for either seat. Scope and price get set on a Growth Assessment Call, based on your stage, your goals, and who’s on your team to carry out the work. I know that’s not the rate card you wanted. It’s also why the ranges above are worth keeping handy. Use them to pressure-test any quote you get. Ours included.

What MSP Owners Ask About Fractional Fees

Is $177 an hour really what fractional executives charge?

Close, if you go by the data instead of the sales pages. Go Fractional’s rolling benchmark averages $177 an hour for both CMOs and CFOs, and a 2026 survey of fractional executives came in at $209 for marketing and $229 for finance.

Senior specialists with deep MSP or M&A experience can charge well above either number.

Should my MSP hire the fractional CMO or the fractional CFO first?

The one sitting on your biggest leak. A stalled pipeline with healthy cash points to the CMO. Shrinking margins, messy numbers, or a buyer on the phone points to the CFO.

Below about $5 million in revenue, paying for both at once eats a big share of the top line, so most MSPs are better off starting with one.

Can I hire a fractional CFO just for exit prep?

Often, and it can be the cleaner way to buy. Exit prep has a defined finish line, so a project scope works where an open-ended retainer would drift.

Start earlier than you think you need to. Normalizing financials and fixing margin problems takes time, and buyers notice when the cleanup happened the month before the deal.

Does the retainer cover the agency, the ads, or the bookkeeper?

Rarely, and that’s the line most MSP budgets forget.

A fractional CMO decides what gets executed and holds the work accountable. The agency, the ad spend, and the tools are separate costs. A fractional CFO works above bookkeeping, so your bookkeeper or CPA still gets paid too.

At what revenue does a full-time CMO or CFO start to make more sense?

$15 million to $20 million, give or take. That’s roughly where daily leadership needs outgrow 14 or 15 hours a week and a loaded salary near $280,000 stops being a stretch.

Plenty of MSPs keep a fractional CFO past that point because the finance work is still periodic rather than daily.

Is a fractional CMO cheaper than hiring a marketing agency?

Wrong comparison, mostly. An agency executes campaigns. A fractional CMO decides which campaigns deserve the money and whether they’re producing pipeline.

Most MSPs between $3 million and $10 million end up needing both, leadership setting the direction and an agency or internal team carrying it out. The expensive mistake is paying an agency to guess at strategy.
