Generative Engine Optimization Services for Tech Companies
Generative engine optimization services get your company named inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini. C4 Solutions runs GEO for tech companies as a measured program of crawler access, citable pages and monthly answer checks.
What Generative Engine Optimization Services Include
Try this. Open ChatGPT and ask who provides the service you sell, in the town or segment you sell it to. Read the names it gives. Are you one of them?
Generative engine optimization is the work of making your company easy for AI systems to find, understand and name when a buyer asks a question. It covers crawler access, pages written to be quoted, the outside sources AI answers draw on, and a fixed set of questions checked every month.
It sits inside our wider SEO, AEO and GEO for tech companies work, but GEO is its own job with its own checks, so it gets its own page. MSP owner? Start with SEO, AEO and GEO for MSPs.
And no, C4 isn’t an agency. We’ve built, scaled and sold tech companies, and we’d rather show you what AI says about you today than pitch you a deck.

Why Good SEO Still Leaves You Out of the Answer
Picture an MSP that ranks on page one for managed IT services in its metro. Good reviews, a steady trickle of referrals, a website that looks fine.
Then a prospect asks an AI tool for IT support for a 60-person law firm that needs compliance help. The answer names five providers. You’re not one of them, and your analytics will never show you the question.
Nothing is broken, exactly. The pages that win a ranking aren’t always the pages an answer pulls from, and the outside sources it leans on may never mention you.
Not great. More blog posts won’t touch it. Somebody has to read the answers first.
What a GEO Program Covers
A GEO program is a handful of workstreams, and each one leaves you something you can inspect. Here’s the whole list, so nobody has to guess what they’re buying. Want the page-by-page side of it? That’s our answer engine optimization service.
| Workstream | What gets done | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Crawler access | robots.txt, firewall and CDN rules reviewed for OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google crawlers | A written access map with every change listed |
| Company facts | One description of what you do, who for and where, worded the same on your site, LinkedIn, directories and partner pages | A fact sheet and a list of mismatches fixed |
| Citable pages | Service, comparison and answer pages that lead with the answer, name real products and cite sources | Pages live, each tied to the question it answers |
| Source presence | The outside pages AI answers lean on for your category, such as directories, review sites, partner lists and industry media | A target list ranked by how often each source appears |
| Question set | A fixed list of real buyer questions across category, comparison, problem and brand types | The list itself, agreed with you before we start |
| Monthly check | That list run on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, then recorded | A monthly log of who is named, which pages are cited and what is said |
visibility gain reported for tested methods in the original GEO research paper. Results varied by domain, so read “up to” as a ceiling.
is roughly how long OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes to reach its search systems.
is what Anthropic publishes, covering training, user requests and search, and each is its own switch, so blocking one leaves the others alone.
is Google’s own wording for AI Overviews and AI Mode. No special markup, no secret file, only indexed pages that can show a snippet.
Fair warning, none of these figures are ours. The paper ran on a research benchmark rather than a tech services market, and crawler docs get edited all the time, which is why we reread them before changing a single robots.txt line.

How We Measure Whether AI Names You
Ever notice that your own Tuesday search never matches your colleague’s? AI answers drift too. One lucky screenshot is a postcard, not a report.
What we do is dull on purpose. We write down the things buyers really type, pulled from old sales calls and the weirder contact-form messages. Every month the list runs again on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, and a person records who got named, which page got linked, what was said about you (right or wrong) and who showed up next to you.
Then we click every citation. Directories, partner pages, a roundup from 2023 nobody remembers. Those are the places the next round of work goes. It’s also why off-site brand mentions matter as much as your own pages.
Category Questions
Think “best managed security provider for 100 people.” Shortlist territory.
Comparison Questions
“Peer group or consultant?” Buyers weighing two ways to fix one problem.
Problem Questions
“Why is our pipeline flat?” Asked long before anyone types your name.
Brand Questions
“What does C4 Solutions do?” Is the answer about you even right?
How C4 Runs GEO
Baseline. Fix. Build. Check.
Baseline the Answers
We run the question list before changing anything. You see where you’re named, where you’re missing and where the answer is simply wrong, plus the sources it leaned on.
Fix Access and Facts
Crawler rules, firewall settings and the plain facts about your company come first. It’s unglamorous and often the fastest win, because a blocked bot can’t read anything you publish later.
Build and Place
Next come citable pages on your site and a ranked list of outside sources worth being on. Directories, partner pages, industry roundups. Only places a real buyer would trust, and nothing bought or faked.
Check and Adjust
Every month the same questions run again. You get what moved, what didn’t and what we’d change. Some work shows up in weeks and some in quarters, and we’ll say which is which.
Robots.txt and AI Crawlers, Explained Plainly
Here’s the first thing we look for, and it’s a little embarrassing. A security plugin, a CDN rule or an old robots.txt line quietly blocks the bots AI products use to find pages. Everything you publish after that is invisible to them.
OpenAI says it uses OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot as independent settings. You can allow the first to appear in ChatGPT search results and disallow the second to keep content out of training. Anthropic runs three robots with separate jobs, and Perplexity says PerplexityBot is for surfacing sites in its search results, not for training foundation models.
Whether to allow training is a business call, and it’s yours. We lay out the options and the trade-offs, then set whatever you choose. Before we sign off, we check each of these.
- OAI-SearchBot is allowed if you want to appear in ChatGPT search results
- Your GPTBot setting is a decision you made on purpose, not a leftover
- Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User are not blocked by accident
- PerplexityBot is allowed, and firewall rules do not challenge it as an attacker
- Key pages load as plain text, with no login wall or script-only content
- The sitemap is current and the canonical tags point where they should
Bot names and rules change. We recheck the vendors’ own pages, including Anthropic’s crawler help page, before every edit, and we keep a dated copy of your robots.txt so any change can be undone. For how the models themselves find pages, see our guides to LLM optimization and ChatGPT SEO.
What GEO Reporting Should Show
A prompt dashboard full of green arrows is easy to build. It’s also the one that fools people, us included. So the report answers plain questions, and every line traces back to something you can open and read.
| Metric | What it tells you | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Named in answers | Whether your company appears at all, by question type | The monthly question log |
| Pages cited | Which of your pages the answers link to | The same log, plus the link under each answer |
| What the answer says | Whether the description of you is accurate and current | Read by a person, line by line |
| Who sits beside you | The competitors named in the same answers | The question log |
| Visits from AI tools | Real clicks arriving from AI products | Site analytics referral data |
| Leads and calls | Whether any of it turns into pipeline | CRM and call tracking |
Referral numbers from AI tools are small and incomplete, so we treat them as a direction, not a verdict. If someone hands you a big traffic chart for GEO, ask what sits behind it.
Where GEO Ends and the Rest Starts
GEO is about being named in generated answers. Writing answer-ready pages on your own site is the answer engine optimization side, and ranking in Google’s results is SEO. They overlap, since one page can serve all three, but they’re checked differently, so we scope them apart. Our post on AEO vs GEO explains which a tech company should fund first.
GEO Program
Access audit, company facts, source presence and the monthly answer check.
GEO With AEO and SEO
The same program plus answer-ready pages and the search foundation, run as one plan.
New to the topic? Our post on GEO versus SEO for MSPs explains the difference in plain terms. Somebody still has to own the plan. A fractional CMO can, or your own team can run what we build.
Only want a prioritized plan? Look at our SEO consulting services. Scope and price come out of a conversation, not a rate card. Want the baseline before anything else? Our AI visibility audit is the smaller start.
Who Should Run GEO
Tech companies usually get this done one of four ways. A GEO specialist or tool vendor brings dashboards and a lot of vocabulary. A general SEO provider treats it as an add-on to rankings. Your own marketer knows the company best and has the least free time.
The fourth is an operator-led partner. That’s us. We set it up beside your team, tie it to pipeline, and hand over the question list, the source map and the playbook when we’re done.
Fair warning. Whoever you pick, ask how they’ll record the answers and what you get to keep. And be careful with anyone who promises a citation, because nobody controls what an AI product says.
Already Paying for SEO?
Good. Keep it. GEO builds on a site that’s crawlable and indexed, so that work isn’t wasted. Have whoever runs it share Search Console access and the page map, and we’ll start there.

- You cannot share analytics or CRM data
Questions About Generative Engine Optimization Services
What do generative engine optimization services include?
GEO services cover crawler access, consistent company facts, pages written to be quoted, presence on the outside sources AI answers draw on, and a monthly check of what ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini say. Each part leaves you something to inspect, from an access map to an answer log. For how training, search and live fetches differ by assistant, see our guide to LLM optimization.
How is GEO different from AEO and SEO?
SEO earns rankings, AEO shapes your pages so they answer questions directly, and GEO is about whether generated answers name your company at all. They share pages and overlap a lot. We scope them separately because each one is checked differently.
Will GEO get us cited by ChatGPT?
Nobody can promise that, and anyone who does is guessing. We can remove blockers, make your pages and facts easy to use, and measure the answers every month. The original GEO research reported gains of up to 40 percent for some methods on its benchmark, and it found results varied by domain.
Do we need to let AI bots crawl our site?
Only if you want to appear in their search answers. Search bots and training bots are separate settings at OpenAI and Anthropic, so you can allow one and block the other. It’s your call, and we’ll lay out the trade-offs before changing anything.
How long does GEO take to show results?
Plan in quarters for pages and outside sources. Access fixes can land sooner, since OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach its search systems. We won’t promise a date, just a roadmap and honest monthly reporting against it.
How do you measure GEO?
With a fixed list of real buyer questions run every month across the main AI tools, plus your analytics and CRM. We log who is named, which pages are cited and what is said about you. Referral traffic from AI tools gets reported too, as a direction rather than a verdict.
Is C4 a GEO agency?
Not in the usual sense. C4 Solutions is an operator-led growth partner, and GEO is one system we build inside a bigger revenue engine. If the real problem is a weak sales process, we’ll tell you that before we sell you a monthly program.
See What AI Says About Your Company Today
We’ll run a short list of real buyer questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, check whether the bots can reach your site, and show you where the answers leave you out. You leave with a short, ranked list of fixes. No deck. No hard sell. The first step is our AI visibility audit.
