ChatGPT SEO for Tech Companies: How to Rank in ChatGPT Answers

ChatGPT doesn’t rank pages. It retrieves a few, cites fewer and answers the rest from memory. Here’s how a tech company gets into the part it can influence.

ChatGPT SEO for a tech company is making sure OpenAI’s search crawler can read your site, then publishing the product facts a buyer’s prompt searches for. ChatGPT doesn’t rank pages. When it searches, it cites a few.

Two technology company leaders reviewing printed pages laid side by side on a tall table
The first job is deciding which pages state the facts a buyer asks for.

It usually starts with a screenshot.

Here is a made-up version that will still sound familiar. The CEO of a 90-person cloud software company asks ChatGPT for the best vendors in her category. Three names come back. Hers isn’t one of them. She forwards the screenshot to marketing with one line: why aren’t we in this?

Fair question. It gets a bad answer inside the hour. Someone says we need more content. Someone else says we need to rank in ChatGPT, which sounds like a project with a finish line.

There isn’t one, because there’s no ranking. ChatGPT produces an answer, and sometimes that answer is assembled from pages a crawler fetched. Different problem. Different fix.

The fix is also less glamorous than the screenshot suggests. A crawler setting. A pricing page that has a price on it. A security page an engineer would sign off on. None of it is clever, and all of it has to be connected, which is the part that tends to go missing. Disconnected pages don’t compound. They reset.

Key Takeaways

The Order of Work

ChatGPT SEO runs in five moves: let OpenAI’s search crawler in, publish the official facts a buyer’s question breaks into, publish what only you can publish, earn mentions you can’t write yourself, and measure with the same prompts every month. Our SEO, AEO and GEO for tech companies page shows how we run that work, and our AEO and GEO for SaaS guide covers the software-only version. To see where you stand today, start with our AI visibility audit.

What ChatGPT SEO Is, and What It Isn’t

ChatGPT SEO is the work of making a company’s site reachable by OpenAI’s search crawler and its pages specific enough to be retrieved and cited when a buyer asks ChatGPT a question. It borrows ordinary SEO fundamentals, adds crawler access, and puts the weight on facts only that company can state.

It isn’t a position. Nobody gets to number one in ChatGPT, and a vendor who says otherwise is selling a metric, not a result.

Here’s a number the screenshot-forwarding crowd tends to skip. Ahrefs went through 66.6 million free, logged-out ChatGPT responses from August and September 2026, and only 14.4% contained fan-out queries, the extra searches ChatGPT fires off while building an answer. Flip it around. About 6 in 7 prompts were answered without a single web search.

So an answer has two ways in. Memory, and the web. Memory belongs to the model, and nobody outside OpenAI gets a vote. The web is where a site can show up on purpose.

Salt, applied correctly: Ahrefs sells an AI marketing platform, and a free chat with no login isn’t what a paying user with a long history sees. Still. Dated, named, measured.

The work splits to match. This quarter, become retrievable. Over years, become the name the model offers unprompted. We’ll spend nearly all of this post on the first.

Step 1: Check the Door for ChatGPT SEO

Dull question first. Can the crawler even get in?

OpenAI documents separate user agents, and its crawler overview says each setting is independent of the others. A site can allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot so its content isn’t used for training. The cost of getting it wrong is spelled out too. Sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.

The Three OpenAI Agents That Matter Here

User agentWhat OpenAI says it is forWhat a block does
OAI-SearchBotSurfacing websites in ChatGPT’s search featuresYour site isn’t shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link
GPTBotCrawling content that may be used to train OpenAI’s generative AI foundation modelsSignals your content shouldn’t be used for training. The search setting is separate
ChatGPT-UserCertain user actions, such as visiting a page when someone asks ChatGPT or a Custom GPT a questionOpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply, and this agent isn’t used to decide what appears in Search

OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and allowing requests from its published IP ranges. That second part is where security-minded companies get caught. A robots.txt file only tells a crawler what it may do. A firewall decides what actually reaches your server. Easy to miss.

Here’s a hypothetical, but the pattern shouldn’t surprise anyone who has worked with a security team. A scraping incident leads to bot protection being switched on, a long list of unfamiliar user agents gets blocked, and nobody tells marketing. Six months later the company is asking why ChatGPT has never heard of it. (It happens more than you’d think.)

Four checks, in the order I’d run them:

  • Read your robots.txt for blanket rules aimed at AI bots, or a disallow left over from a redesign.
  • Ask whoever owns the firewall or CDN whether OAI-SearchBot is on the allow list, and compare it against the IP ranges OpenAI publishes.
  • Search your server logs for the OAI-SearchBot user agent. If it never appears, that’s your answer.
  • Wait about a day. OpenAI says its search systems can take around 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt update.

One more habit. Put the facts in plain text on the page. I can’t tell you how OpenAI’s crawler treats every script-heavy page, because the documentation doesn’t say, and a pricing table that only exists after JavaScript runs is a risk you don’t need to take.

Step 2: Publish the Pages a Buyer’s Prompt Breaks Into

When ChatGPT does search, it rarely runs just the question. Google’s guide describes the technique as query fan-out, a set of related searches the model issues to gather more information. The Ahrefs study measured what ChatGPT’s version looks like, and three findings matter to a tech company.

  • 6.8% of fan-out queries used a site: operator to search a single website. Of the frequent ones, 75.9% pointed at a brand’s own site.
  • The word “official” appeared in 13.1% of English fan-out queries in September, up from 10.1% in August. The model is checking what the company itself says.
  • “Price” rose from 6.04% to 8.88% of fan-outs in a month. Reviews grew by a third. “Specifications” entered the top 50.

Read that as a to-do list. A buyer asks for the best tools in your category, ChatGPT goes looking for your price, your specs and your official word, and “contact us for pricing” gives it very little to cite.

This is where the screenshot problem usually traces back. Ads are running. The blog is outsourced. The product pages were written for a sales call, and nothing on them states a fact a model can lift. Plenty of activity. Very little to cite.

The Pages Worth Building First

  • Pricing. A real range beats “request a quote.” If you truly can’t publish prices, publish what drives them: seats, usage, modules, implementation hours.
  • Specifications and limits, including what the product doesn’t do and which versions it supports.
  • One page per integration you actually support, answering what an admin asks before installing. Which permissions does it need? What data moves? Can it connect to ConnectWise or Microsoft Entra ID?
  • A security and compliance page that says which reports exist, who can request them and what’s in scope. Never imply a certification you don’t hold.
  • Fit. Who the product is for, and who should buy something else. Short, honest, quietly effective.

Format helps. Microsoft’s guidance on AI search answers notes that assistants can often lift direct question and answer pairs word for word, and it admits there’s no secret strategy for being selected. So put the answer directly under the question, in plain sentences, with the price or the spec in the first one.

Product manager handing a printed one-page fact sheet across a table to a colleague
A page a sales lead would hand to a prospect is usually a page ChatGPT can use.

A warning belongs here. Google’s guide says creating separate content for every possible fan-out variation, primarily to manipulate rankings or AI responses, violates its scaled content abuse policy, and that a high quantity of pages doesn’t make a site higher quality. So don’t build 400 pages. Build the six a buyer would need, and make each one the best answer to its own question.

My test is simple. Would your sales lead hand this page to a prospect who asked the question out loud? If yes, it’s probably a page ChatGPT can use. If it needs a call to make sense, it isn’t.

Step 3: Publish What Only Your Company Can Publish

There’s a shift worth knowing about. Ahrefs tracked ChatGPT’s US citations from March to September 2026, covering 2.4 to 3.8 million answers a month. Reddit went from about 1 in 5 answers to about 1 in 43. Wikipedia went from 1 in 7 to 1 in 35. Big moves, in six months.

Where did the citations go? To research bodies, regulators, brands and hands-on testers, according to Ahrefs, while explainer and aggregator sites lost ground. Its conclusion is the line worth keeping.

“The pages holding up best are the ones only you can publish, like original research, hands-on testing, and your own product facts.”

Google says much the same about its own AI features, in plainer words. It separates commodity content, the “7 tips” post anyone could write, from non-commodity content with a unique point of view, and says the second is likely to influence presence in generative AI search over the long run more than any other suggestion in its guide.

For a tech company, “only you can publish” is a short list, and a good share of it already exists inside the building.

  • Implementation timelines from your own projects, as ranges, with what made the long ones long.
  • Benchmarks from your own product or service data, with the method stated.
  • The mistakes you see in evaluations, written by the person who sees them.
  • A test or teardown you ran, including the result you didn’t expect.

One rule. If the number isn’t yours and verifiable, it stays out. A borrowed statistic is commodity content with a footnote. Skip it.

Step 4: Earn the Mentions You Can’t Write Yourself

A model asked for the best vendor doesn’t only read your site. G2’s 2026 AI Search Insight Report, a survey of more than 1,000 B2B software buyers and decision makers, found that 51% start software research with an AI chatbot more often than Google, and 71% rely on chatbots somewhere in the process. G2 runs a review site, so it benefits from the conclusion that third-party proof matters. Take the direction, not the decimal.

The Ahrefs data adds a wrinkle. Partner publications, the outlets with content deals with OpenAI, roughly doubled their combined share of ChatGPT’s citations among its top 200 cited domains, from 7.5% in March to 15.8% in July, and still held 12.5% in late September. Ahrefs’ read is that coverage in those publications is worth pursuing.

In practice this is dull and slow. Not a campaign. Reviews from real customers, with detail. Coverage in the trade publications your buyers read. A founder who speaks where your category gathers and gets written up for it. Association and analyst listings that are free to earn and honest to claim.

What it doesn’t mean is seeding. Google’s guide says seeking inauthentic mentions across the web isn’t as helpful as it might seem, and the downside of a fake review is larger than the upside.

You can’t write your way out of this one. Earned proof compounds slowly, which is exactly why it’s hard to copy.

Step 5: Measure ChatGPT SEO Without Fooling Yourself

Rank trackers don’t apply here. That’s the first thing to tell your board.

  1. Write 15 to 25 prompts a buyer would actually type, across category, comparison, price and integration questions. Freeze the wording.
  2. Run the same set monthly, logged out and logged in. Record which companies get named, which pages get cited and what the answer says about you. Treat it as a sample, because answers vary from run to run.
  3. Watch referral traffic in analytics. According to OpenAI’s help center, ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links from its search results, so the source is easy to isolate.
  4. Add “How did you hear about us?” to the demo form, as free text rather than a dropdown. Buyers will tell you when a chatbot sent them.
  5. Tie it to pipeline: demos requested and opportunities opened from those sessions, not impressions.

Then compare quarter over quarter. Not week over week.

Keep the expectations honest, too. OpenAI says search systems take around 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt change. Nothing on that page promises when a new page will be cited, and neither will I.

Four Weeks, in Order

  1. Week one, open the door. Robots.txt, the firewall allow list, server logs. Confirm OAI-SearchBot can read the site.
  2. Week two, pricing, specifications and the integration pages, written as plain text with the answer first.
  3. Week three, the security page, plus one original piece built from data or lessons only your team holds.
  4. Week four, the prompt panel. Write it, run it, save the baseline, and book the next run.

Zoom out and this isn’t a ChatGPT project. It’s the marketing system a buyer always needed, now graded by a machine that doesn’t forgive vagueness. If your company sells to MSPs, our post on getting an MSP recommended by ChatGPT covers that branch, and Bing and Copilot work differently enough to earn their own playbook. Loose Ends, Answered

Does blocking GPTBot hide us from ChatGPT search?

Separate switches, per OpenAI. OAI-SearchBot decides whether you show up in ChatGPT search answers, and GPTBot covers training use, so a GPTBot block alone doesn’t remove you from search.

A blanket rule that blocks every AI user agent catches both, though. Read what your robots.txt and firewall say, then confirm it in your server logs.

Can we pay to be named in ChatGPT answers?

Ads exist, and they’re a separate thing from organic citations. OpenAI’s crawler page lists OAI-AdsBot, which visits landing pages submitted as ads on ChatGPT to check they comply with its policies.

That’s an ad budget conversation. This post covers the organic side.

Will an llms.txt file get us cited?

Google says to skip it. Its guide tells site owners they can ignore creating unnecessary AI text files like llms.txt for Google Search, and nothing on OpenAI’s crawler page describes the file as a signal for ChatGPT search.

Harmless if it takes an hour. A poor place to spend a week.

Realistically, how long until a change shows up?

About 24 hours for a crawler access change, according to OpenAI. Content and mentions have no published timeline at all.

Judge the content work over quarters, and treat anyone quoting you a date as someone guessing.

Do Claude, Perplexity and Gemini each need their own plan?

The foundations overlap, and the crawlers don’t. Each platform runs its own bots and publishes its own settings, so check access for each one, then spend the content effort once.

Our AEO and GEO for SaaS guide walks through the multi-platform view for software companies.

What number belongs in the board deck?

Three, tracked together: how often your company is named across a fixed prompt set, ChatGPT-tagged sessions to the pages that matter, and opportunities where the buyer cites an AI assistant.

Rankings aren’t on the list, because ChatGPT doesn’t publish any.
